Audience

This course is designed for the aspiring Commercial Property practitioner – whether Trainee Solicitor, Licensed, recently Qualified Solicitor or lawyer seeking a change of direction.  It assumes knowledge of the underlying law and provides total immersion in the progression of the Commercial Property transaction from instruction to its conclusion, with specific emphasis on commercial lease drafting skills and the identification of potential problem areas and pitfalls.

Topics Covered

The topics will include an in-depth analysis of the Commercial Property transaction, the related searches and enquiries, with particular reference to a commercial lease.  Drafting skills will also be practiced through preparatory workshops and immersion in the subject matter.

Prior Knowledge

You will need to have obtained a law degree or equivalent and will have completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or equivalent prior to attending this course.

In order to benefit from the preparatory work, you will need to have familiarised yourself with the Model Commercial Lease and the Code for Leasing Business Premises in England and Wales 2007, which are both in the public domain and available for download on the internet.

If possible, you should also obtain copies of the standard commercial leases used within your firm.

Prior to the course, you will be required to carry out 5 hours preparatory work of a practical nature.  This work will serve to introduce you to the subject matter and provide the trainer with an indication of your existing strengths and weaknesses.

Coursework

Preparation

You should complete (and if necessary submit) 5 hours of preparatory work (which you will have access to in advance) and should be conversant with both the Model Commercial Lease and the Code for Leasing Business Premises in England and Wales 2007, which are both in the public domain and available for download on the internet.

Post-Coursework

 Following the course, you will be required to complete (and if necessary submit) a personal development plan.  You will also leave the course ready to engage (under supervision) in ongoing Commercial Property drafting.
